Tom Brady is back for the Patriots

Tom Brady is back for the Patriots

Tom Brady, the start Quarter Back will be seen in action this season as the Patriots kick off the NFL season with their opening match against Buffalo Bills. Last season, he tore his left anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament when Patriots were playing against Kansas Chiefs. The helmet of Bernard Pollard smashed into his left knee and he had to be carried to the side line. The hit by Pollard looked genuinely accidental and so it was not even flagged by the officials.

His knee was surgically reconstructed and the operation was performed by a close friend and orthopedic surgeon, Neal S ElAttrache in Los Angeles. It is reported that Brady chose this doctor against the wishes of the medical staff of the Patriots' team. However, in an interview, Brady said that he had the full support of coach Belichick and owner Robert Kraft before he went ahead with the surgery. The operation was performed on October 6th and two days after the operation, Brady moved around the hospital with his toddler son Jack on his shoulder. Despite the repeated protests by doctors and wife Gisele Bundchen, he persisted and this led to the development of hepatoma and it was followed by the Staph infection. By doing too much too soon, he developed complications and required two procedures to clear the infection. After the surgery, he returned to Foxborough in November to begin daily rehab at the medical facility of the Patriots and was soon in a position to move around. In June, the 31-year old Brady began the full-roster organized training activities (OTAs) for the Patriots.

Last year has been a very eventful one for Brady with his injury, surgery and his marriage to Gisele Bundchen. They were married on Feb 26 in Santa Monica, California and later they held a large ceremony for friends and family in a beach front in Costa Rica. Brady said that he had used his injury period to spend time with his wife and his son Jack. He shares custody of his son with his former girl friend Bridget Moynahan. He said in an interview that he did a lot of self-introspection during this injury period and he had also learnt to appreciate the small things in life. This has given him a new perspective about his life and career and he is all geared up for the up-coming NFL season.

When asked about his prospects of playing for the Patriots, Brady said that he is very eager to play and wants to play for another 10 years. He also said that his recovery is on schedule and he has no pain or problem after the surgery and the two procedures that were performed to remove his staph infection. In fact, he is practicing really hard and is throwing quite a lot to Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Joey Galloway and Greg Lewis. Brady is the glimmering hope for the Patriots and with his return they are the favorites to win the 2010 NFL Championship.

Red Sox players in All-Star game

Red Sox players in All-Star game

The Boston Red Sox had six players in the All-Star MLB game that took place on July 14th at Busch Stadium in St.Louis. This was the first All-star game held in St.Louis since 1966 and the Cardinals wanted to use this opportunity to show the planned Ballpark Village that was being constructed in the former Busch stadium site, across the street from the current one. In this mid-season exhibition of talent, the American League beat the National League to win the title.

The six All-Stars of Boston Red Sox included two starters who were elected in fan balloting and they were outfielder Jason Bay and second baseman Dustin Pedroia. Jason Bay was elected to his third All-Star game with 4,087,450 votes while Dustin Pedroia was elected with 3.404,384 votes. Bay was the starting right fielder for the National League in 2006 in Pittsburg. This is the 10th continuous season in which a fielder from Red Sox was elected for the All-star game. Bay will also have the distinction of being the 13th player from Red Sox to start the All-star game in the outfield. Pedroia, on the other hand, had the chance to become the second player from Red Sox after Bobby Doer to start the All-star game in consecutive seasons. Though, this was his second All-star selection, Pedroia bowed out of the All-star game. The current MVP of the American League cited family health issues to stay out of this game.

Tim Wakefield was another Red Sox player who was selected to play in the All-star game for the first time in his illustrious 17 year career. He is also the second player at the age of 42, since Satchel Paige who got a chance to play in 1952 at the age of 42. Apart from Wakefield, Carl Yastrzemski was the only Red Sox player to play in the All-star game at the age of 42 and 43 in 1982 and 1983 respectively. Infielder Kevin Youkilis of the Red Sox also made his second continuous appearance in the All-Star game.

The other two players from Boston Red Sox who played in the All-Star game were pitchers Josh Beckett and Jonanthan Papelbon. Papelbon was playing for the American League for the fourth straight year and he is the third player from Boston to be selected for the All-star game in each of his first full league seasons. Beckett appeared in the All-star game for the second time in his career. Beckett, along with Wakefield, became the sixth pair of Red Sox starting pitchers who played in the same All-Star game and they are the first pair since 2002.

The Red Sox players broke many records in the All-star game besides providing wholesome entertainment to MLB fans. This was evident from 46, 760 people who were present in the stadium besides the millions of fans who watched it live on FOX.

Rasheed Wallace joins the Boston Celtics

Rasheed Wallace joins Celtics

Rasheed Wallace joins Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce of the Celtics in the hope of winning the next few NBA Championships. This four-time All-Star player will be a great addition to the Boston Celtics and he is likely to back up Kevin Garnett at power forward and Kendrick Perkins at the center. He was introduced during the Celtics press conference and the general manager of the Boston Celtics, Danny Ainge said that he was very “ecstatic” to have Wallace on the team and he was sure that this move would boost the confidence and morale of the entire team and propel them to win the next Championship.

Wallace is a big man at 6 foot 11 inches and he played an important role in the 2004 Championship that was won by Detroit Pistons. Last year alone, he averaged 12 points for the Pistons and this was his 14th straight year in which he had averaged 10 or more points. During the last 14 seasons, he has rebounded at an average of 6.9 and he has blocked at an average of 1.4. Though he is starting to age at 34, he is still remarkable at shooting and rebounding. This impressive record is the reason why the Celtics put in a lot of effort to bring him to Boston. Danny Ainge, coach Doc Rivers, owner Wyc Grousbeck, Allen, Garnett and Pierce went to Wallace's house in Detroit to convince him to join the Celtics. After careful consideration, Wallace decided to join the Celtics and this was informed by his agent, Bill Strickland. Boston Celtics belong to the old school tradition that is dedicated to defense and Wallace said that this was one of the primary reasons that convinced him to join the Celtics.

Wallace signed a two-year contract at the mid-level exception with the Celtics for a sum of $5.7 or $5.8 million. Usually, mid-level season means a sum of money that is more than the average NBA salary. Teams that have exceeded the maximum Salary Cap can use this exception to sign free agents.

Wallace is also well-known for his technical fouls. He has a dubious record of having 41 technical fouls during the 2000-01 season when he was with Portland Trailblazers and this is the record for the most number of fouls during a single NBA season. According to the NBA rules, each foul after the 15th is entitled for an automatic suspension and during the last season, he was suspended on April 1st in New Jersey after he picked up his 16th technical foul. During this season, the NBA league fined him $25,000 for his criticism of officials Mike Callahan and Kenny Mauer after the Celtics won game 5 in the Eastern Conference in Boston.

With Allen, Wallace, Pierce and Garnett in their 30s, Celtics are left with their last few years of contending for the NBA Championship. The plans of Ainge and the hopes of numerous Boston Celtics fans can become a reality if Wallace can keep his temper in check.

Red Sox Player Julio Lugo To Leave Red Sox

Julio Lugo Designated for assignment

Julio Cesar Lugo was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox after repeated under-achievement and injuries during his two and a half years tenure with this team. This designation was confirmed by his agent, Sam Levinson on July 17th and what this effectively means is that the Red Sox has 10 days to trade or release this veteran shortstop. He had signed a four year contract for $36 million as a free agent before the 2007 season and it is estimated that about $13.6 million is still remaining on his contract. So far, there have been no takers for this 33 year old and he is likely to become a free agent after the 10 day period.

The Red Sox management was very excited about Lugo when he was playing for Tampa Bay Rays and they decided to bring him on at a high price. But, Lugo consistently under performed for the Red Sox right from the time he joined the team in December 2006. He batted .189 up to July 7th in his first season after which he was dropped from the leadoff spot to the bottom of the batting order. He made a come back to finish the season with .237 with 8 home runs as the Red Sox won their second championship in four years. His problems persisted in the last season where he batted .268 with just one home run and 22 RBIs. He made 16 errors before he had a torn quadriceps and his season came to an abrupt end. He returned in late April and since then he has batted .287 in 37 games and he had a whopping seven errors in 97 chances. This poor performance forced the Red Sox organization to designate him for assignment because they want to put their best players in the field always.

There were many rumors about Lugo before the official announcement was made. He missed a mandatory team workout and did not travel to Toronto with his team mates to play against the Toronto Blue Jays. Terry Francona, the manager, told reporters that Lugo had missed the team workout because of a communication mix-up. But it was very obvious that the Red Sox was doing everything possible to move him because Lugo is league-average with his bat and below average with this glove. Also, they want to bring in other talented players like Clay Buchholz, Mike Lowell and Jed Lowrie.

This deal will be one of the worst deals in the career of Theo Epstein, the general manager of Red Sox. They are looking at this deal as a sunk cost and Epstein said in an interview that the team had paid for his past performance and not for his current one. Though, Epstein is talking to other teams to trade him, it looks very unlikely. The Red Sox are obligated to pay the remaining amount before releasing him and they are ready to accept the mistake so that they can move on with the remaining season.

Bruins will host Flyers in 2010 at Fenwark Park

Bruins will host the Flyers in 2010

The National Hockey League made an official announcement that the 2009-2010 regular season will have a match up between Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park in Boston. This historic ballpark will host the game between the Eastern Conference rivals at 1pm on January 1st 2010. This is the fourth outdoor hockey game and the third winter classic in the last five seasons and it will be broad casted to viewers by NBC in the US and Canada. CBC and RDS will show case the event live and NHL radio and Sirius XM Radio will provide the radio coverage of the event. This game will be sponsored by Bridgestone and is expected to be viewed by more than 6 million people in the whole of North America. The primary idea behind these outdoor hockey games played at baseball parks is to acknowledge the recent uptrend for the original six teams after a prolonged period of downturn.

The first winter classic took place between Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburg Penguins in which the Penguins won 2-1. This was held at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo with more than 71,000 fans. Last year, the Detroit red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks at Wigley Field in Chicago. But the number of people who turned last year was only half of the previous year mainly because of the small size of the stadium. These winter classics are the most watched game of the regular season and it received the “Sports Event of the Year” award by the SportsBusinessJournal. The idea for these winter classic games came from the Heritage Classic game that took place in November 2003 in Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium in Canada between Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers.

The players of both the teams are looking forward to this outdoor game and according to Paul Kelly, the NHLPA Director, this event can become an important highlight in the career of Bruins and Flyers. Also, Gary Bettman, commissioner of NHL was very excited about the event and he said that this is a unique event that has to take place in a unique venue where the Bruins and Flyers will renew their rivalry. These two teams have had a long and contentious rivalry that began with the Flyers beating the Bruins to get their first Stanley Cup Trophy in 1974. In fact, the rivalry between Boston and Philadelphia is historic with Celtics and 76ers fighting it out during the 1981 and 1982 NBA Championship and the Patriots and Eagles in 2005. All this rivalry makes this Winter Classic game one of the most sought-after sports event in Boston, especially among NHL fans.

The regular season of NHL will begin in October and will go on until April. The Bruins are expected to perform better this season with the presence of Tim Thomas (recipient of Vezina Trophy and William M Jennings Trophy), Zdeno Chara (recipient of James Morris Memorial Trophy) and coach Claude Julien (recipient of Jack Adams Trophy).
